Spinel is the gem of reinvention — a quiet powerhouse that brings clarity, resilience, and renewed energy. A cut-corner square spinel from Mozambique sits bezel-set in warm 14k yellow gold. This stone shows a balanced blue-gray tone indoors, leaning more blue than gray — and outdoors, it comes to life with a vivid, oceanic glow. Loupe-clean and highly brilliant, this spinel delivers exceptional sparkle from every angle thanks to its high dispersion and optimized precision cutting.

Four white diamonds are prong-set at the cardinal points — North, South, East, and West — giving the ring a structured, symmetrical presence. Finished in high-polish gold, this piece blends clean lines with standout color in a modern, wearable silhouette.

Ideal as a statement ring or alternative engagement option.

STONE ORIGIN AND HISTORY:

MOZAMBIQUE (Spinel)
Spinel from the Cuamba region in northern Mozambique has quietly entered the gem world over the past decade, and only recently gained wider recognition for its unique and refined beauty. Found along the Lúrio River in Nampula Province, this material stands out for its distinctive color range—spanning from deep purples and steely blues to soft silvery greys and the occasional vibrant magenta. The lighter-toned spinels, in particular, reveal exceptional dispersion (fire) due to their open body color, making them flash with brilliant spectral light.

These spinels are hosted in metamorphosed marble—a geological setting similar to that of Mahenge and Luc Yen—which allows for the formation of clean, well-structured crystals with excellent transparency. Unlike alluvial stones, this is hard rock mining, typically carried out by artisanal and small-scale miners working in remote and weather-sensitive terrain.

As demand for Mozambique spinel has grown, new buyers have flocked to the area, absorbing much of the production. Meanwhile, larger clean material is becoming increasingly rare, and mining is made even more difficult by seasonal weather disruptions and the unpredictable nature of the deposit.

We are thrilled to share select Mozambique spinels from this emerging but increasingly rare source. Their understated elegance, visible fire, and complex tones make them a true connoisseur’s gem—and one of our personal favorites.
