Jewelry & Gemstone Care

Our pieces can be delicate due to the nature of colored gemstones. We strongly encourage you to invest the time to take care of your treasures in order to prolong longevity, and maintain beauty. Here are some helpful tips to follow:

- Remove jewelry before any physical activities or tasks that may subject your jewelry to impact, friction, or contact with moisture. Examples are sports, household chores, gardening, applying lotion or creams, etc.

- Avoid exposing your jewelry to harsh chemicals, such as household cleaners, perfumes, and hairsprays, as they can cause discoloration or erosion damage.

- Store jewelry in a clean, dry, and soft-lined compartment or jewelry box to prevent scratches and tangling. We recommend storing each piece separately.

- Regularly clean your jewelry using a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dirt, oils, and fingerprints. For a deeper clean, a mild solution of gentle soap can be used with a soft brush to remove dirt and grime. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh cleaning solutions.

- Regularly inspect your jewelry for issues like bent prongs, loose stones, or any other signs of damage. These issues should be addressed immediately to prevent further loss or harm.

- Avoid extreme temperature changes, as this can cause structural damage to gemstones and metal.

- Be cautious using Ultrasonic cleaners, as certain gemstones will take damage in them. See our care guide below that covers specific mineral species.

- Safeguard your investment by considering insurance coverage. Obtaining insurance for your loved pieces ensures financial protection in case of loss, theft, or damage. We highly recommend this for any high value items, as it will provide you with peace of mind and preserve the financial worth of your jewelry.

- Keep in mind that colored gemstones are softer than diamonds, and therefore should be treated with utmost care. Be sure to reference the Jewelry & Gemstones Care Card that is included in each shipment for details on extending the life of your jewelry.

  • Sapphire Care

    - Sapphires are very durable at a 9 on the Mohs scale, but still can sustain damage from impact or blows. Be sure to put your sapphire jewelry in a safe place before engaging in any activities that would subject it to such damage.

    - For regular cleaning at home, use a mild solution of warm water and gentle soap. Soak the jewelry briefly, then use a soft brush to gently scrub around the gemstone, removing any dirt or debris. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

    - For professional cleaning you can use an ultrasonic cleaner on most sapphire. However, if your sapphire contains surface reaching inclusions or cracks it's best to stick with the at home cleaning method.

  • Garnet Care

    - Garnets range from 6.5 to 7.5 on the mohs scale. While they are not as prone to scratching as softer materials such as opal, they can still sustain damage from impact and friction. Be sure to remove your garnet jewelry and store it safely before engaging in any activities that would subject it to damage.

    - For regular cleaning at home, a solution of mild soap and warm water (not hot) with a soft brush can be effective at removing daily dirt and oils.

    - For professional cleaning you can use an ultrasonic cleaner on most garnet. However, if your garnet contains surface reaching inclusions or cracks it's best to stick with the at home cleaning method.

  • Spinel Care

    - Spinels range from a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. As with other gems in this range, it is very durable, but can take damage from impact and friction. Always remove your spinel jewelry and store it safely before engaging in any activities that would subject it to damage.

    - To clean spinel gemstones, use a mild solution of warm water and gentle soap. Soak the jewelry briefly, then use a soft brush to gently scrub around the gemstone, removing any dirt or debris. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

    - For professional cleaning you can use an ultrasonic cleaner on most spinel. However, if your spinel contains surface reaching inclusions or cracks it's best to stick with the at home cleaning method.

  • Emerald Care

    - Though emeralds range from a 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, emeralds typically have many natural inclusions, which makes a brittle stone. Take extra care when engaging in any activities that may cause your jewelry to sustain impacts or friction. Always remove emeralds before any activities listed above in jewelry care.

    - Emerald can still be cleaned at home effectively by using a mild solution of warm water and a gentle dish soap. Soak the jewelry for a short time, then use a soft brush (such as a toothbrush with soft bristles) to gently remove any dirt or debris. Rinse the emerald thoroughly with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

    - Never put emeralds in an ultrasonic cleaner, or use a steam cleaner on it. Water and steam can enter cracks and expand them, decreasing the clarity and color of the emerald.
